Movable Type is a "decentralized web-based personal publishing system designed to ease maintenance of regularly-updated content." While there are other options such as Blogger and Livejournal, MT has many advantages such as its flexiblity and powerful features. Movable Type is designed for businesses and power users who are comfortable managing their own servers and installing applications on them, or who have a need for customizing the code of the application itself.

Out of all the blogging/online publishing systems, Movable Type (MT) beats everything else with its flexibility and usability. It has several built-in features, strong documentation and helpful user-supported technical forum. Also, it is continuously being tweaked and improved by its original developers, as well as other MT developers. No wonder it has become one of the most popular tools on the web. As a blogging tool alone, Movable Type has nearly every feature you might desire, and continues to add more. Many of their users are highly technical themselves, and have created additional plug-ins that can be added to the standard installation.  Movable Type is the blogging software package chosen by bloggers who care what other bloggers think, and who notice and appreciate other Movable Type blogs.

However, one thing that puts off some people in using MT is the installation process. First of all, you need your own web host/server and domain in order to use it. In addition, if you are planning to install the system yourself, you need to be able to configure scripts (Perl/CGI) and know how to use FTP (File Transfer Protocol). Otherwise, you can opt to use MT's pay installation services if you pay for the license.

The least attractive functionality of Movable Type is the need to rebuild the blog whenever you make a change to a template, a configuration setting, or add a new category. Waiting for the rebuild is annoying, to say the least, and certainly slows down any customization work you do to the design or layout. This can be addressed by turning on dynamic page-building, but some users have found that the server load that occurs as a result is unacceptable to their Web host.

Limitations and problems aside, it can still be concluded that Movable Type is one of the best tools of its kind.
